WHEN SOMETHING you’re allergic to lands
on your skin, you might break out in a rash.
Allergens can land on your eyes too.
Fortunately, they won’t break out in a rash—
how awful would that be? But your eyes will
react, usually by:
■■
Swelling.
■■
Turning red and itching.
■■
Tearing.
It’s called allergic conjunctivitis, and it’s
a common condition that affects millions of
people. Sometimes it occurs in conjunction
with symptoms of nasal allergies, like
sneezing. But not always.
Allergic conjunctivitis is treated in much
the same way as any other allergy. First you
want to avoid the cause, or allergy trigger.
“Ideally, avoiding the allergen is
recommended, but for many that can
be difficult, particularly for those living
here in the Willamette Valley who are
allergic to grass,” says Daniel Bustos, MD,
ophthalmologist at PeaceHealth Medical
Group.
Second, talk with your doctor. He or she
can confirm that your symptoms are indeed
because of allergies (and help pinpoint what
they are).
“There are eye drops
and other medications that
can help to treat your eye
allergy symptoms, helping
to make your eyes feel and
look better,” says Dr. Bustos.
In the meantime, you
may want to try:
■■
Putting cold compresses on
your eyes to lessen swelling.
■■
Washing your hands often.
■■
Resisting the urge to rub your eyes.
